毛詩序《卷耳》，后妃之志也，又當輔佐君子，求賢審官，知臣下之勤勞，內有進賢之志，而無險詖私謁之心，朝夕思念，至於憂勤也。
詩文
采采卷耳，不盈頃筐，嗟我懷人，寘彼周行。
I was gathering and gathering the mouse-ear,
But could not fill my shallow basket.
With a sigh for the man of my heart,
I placed it there on the highway.
陟彼崔嵬，我馬虺隤，我姑酌彼金罍，維以不永懷。
I was ascending that rock-covered height,
But my horses were too tired to breast it.
I will now pour a cup from that gilded vase,
Hoping I may not have to think of him long.
陟彼高岡，我馬玄黃，我姑酌彼兕觥，維以不永傷。
I was ascending that lofty ridge,
But my horses turned of a dark yellow.
I will now take a cup from that rhinoceros' horn,
Hoping I may not have long to sorrow.
陟彼砠矣，我馬瘏矣，我僕痡矣，云何吁矣。
I was ascending that flat-topped height,
But my horses became quite disabled,
And my servants were [also] disabled.
Oh! how great is my sorrow!
《卷耳》，四章，章四句。
註解
這是一首妻子懷念遠行的丈夫的歌謠。開始寫妻子一邊採卷耳一邊思念丈夫，由於心不在焉，採了半天也沒採滿一隻斜口淺筐，她一邊歎氣，一邊把筐放在路邊。以下三章是她的想像，她仿佛看到自己的丈夫騎馬越過高高的山崗，由於路途艱險，他騎的馬都累病了，他的僕役也筋疲力盡，而他也在借酒澆愁，以抒解思家之情。
采采：採呀採。卷耳：一種菊科植物，即蒼耳，嫩苗可食。
盈：滿。頃筐：斜口的淺筐，形近簸箕。
寘：同置，搁置。周行(ㄏㄤˊ，音航)：大道。
陟(ㄓˋ，音至)：登。崔嵬(ㄨㄟˊ)：高山。
虺(ㄏㄨㄟ，音灰)隤(ㄊㄨㄟˊ，音颓)：疲极至病
酌：斟酒。金罍(ㄌㄟˊ，音雷)：一種青銅酒器。
維：發語詞，無義。永懷：長久地思念。
玄黃：生病。
兕(ㄙˋ，音四)觥(ㄍㄨㄥ，音公)：酒器，兕角杯。兕：犀牛。
傷：傷感，悲傷。
砠(ㄐㄩ，音居)：有土的石山。
瘏(ㄊㄨˊ，音图)：疲累而病。
痡(ㄆㄨ，音扑)：義同“瘏”。
云：語氣助詞，無義。
吁：憂愁的意思。
