Notes: Junzi is often used in the sense of an ideal individual in Confucian literature (Yao 2000, p. 25) An essential characteristic of a junzi is benevolence 仁 (Yao 2000, p. 214). For example, 君子去仁,惡乎成名? 'If a superior man [junzi] abandons virtue, how can he fulfill the requirements of that name?' (Lunyu 4:5, trans. by Legge 1861; Guoyu '君子' 2)
