Notes: Junzi is often used in the sense of an ideal individual in Confucian literature (Yao 2000, p. 25) An essential characteristic of a junzi is benevolence 仁 (Yao 2000, p. 214). For example, 是故君子有大道,必忠信以得之 'Thus we see that the sovereign [junzi] has a great course to pursue. He must show entire self-devotion and sincerity to attain it.' (Book of Rites, Great Learning 《禮記‧大學》, trans. by Legge 1885) Also, 君子去仁,惡乎成名? 'If a superior man [junzi] abandon virtue, how can he fulfill the requirements of that name?' (Lunyu 4:5, trans. by Legge 1861)
